Serving as a model for the future replacement high school, the STEAM Center of Innovation sets the stage for Fife High School’s four “C’s”: Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Creativity. The 31,000 SF building houses science, technology, engineering, art, and math educational programs as well as a central mechanical plant that will serve the entire campus. Cross-discipline collaboration is encourage through the building’s organization and design, with a variety of complementary learning and gathering spaces to foster creativity and connection. The building’s exposed structure makes a dramatic statement throughout, featuring glulam roof girders, large steel girders, and custom clerestory trusses. The south facade’s distinctive multi-story glass wall is shaded by a large overhang, enabled by deft structural design that allows the building volume to rise effortlessly from the plaza.
