The Rainier Building compliments the surrounding topography by cascading down the hillside at the north end of the Fort Steilacoom campus. The 80,000 square-foot structure is designed with three structural steel framed classroom pods. Each pod is tailored to its program—one provides a two-story planetarium dome, the other has strict vibration criteria to accommodate scientific equipment. The three pods are connected by two large multi-story winter garden spaces that are framed in steel to bring natural light into the building. This project achieved LEED® Gold certification.
